While he won his third straight points classification in the Tour de France this year, Peter Sagan had a disappointing year in 2014. However, his new team manager Bjarne Riss has high expectations for Sagan’s first season with Tinfoff-Saxo.
Sagan won just three WorldTour races in 2014. The E3 Prijs Vlaanderen-Harelbeke and a stage in both the Tirreno-Adriatico and the Tour de Suisse. The Slovakian rider also had a podium spot in Gent Wevelgem, a sixth place in Paris Roubaix and several close finishes in Tour de France stages. A terrific year for 99% of the peleton, but not for Sagan. Riis acknowledges this and expects better results in 2015.
“We must win a Classic," Riis said to BT.dk. "Peter Sagan has a chance to win in all of them, and I will allow myself to be disappointed if he does not. And then we must have a victory in a Grand Tour."
But Sagan is not the only rider at Tinkoff-Saxo with high expectations for 2015. Alberto Contador wants to win both the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France. Riis talked about combining the two toughest races in the world.
"Alberto needs challenges to motivate him," Riis said. "Of course there is a risk associated with it, but I like the idea. We need riders who have the desire to risk it all. Why shouldn't he? If there is anyone who can do it, it's him. He can recover for the Tour. If I did not believe it, I would oppose the plan."
