André Greipel missed out on a second stage win in today's stage of the Tour de France when the German could only manage 4th. Having found himself in a great position, the German was forced to hit the wind too early according to his lead-out man Jurgen Roelandts.
When the sprinters last had their chance to shine, André Greipel had been left frustrated after his was brought down in a late crash. Today he was ready to take his revenge but their was no glory for him in Nimes as he could only manage fourth in the final sprint.
Greipel found himself in a great position when the sprint was launched but was clearly beaten by a very fast Alexander Kristoff. However, his lead-out man Jurgen Roelandts wrote the result down to the German having hit the wind too early.
"I think we were in a pretty good position," Roelandts told Sporza. "Greipel had a chance, but sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. He was fighting to stay near the front and had to start his sprint too early to avoid getting boxed in.
"With the rain and the roundabouts, the peloton could not go much faster than the leaders. It was amazing what the escapees did. Now we focus all attention on the last two flat stages."
