Even though he won three Grand Tour stages in 2014, Michael Rogers of Tinkoff-Saxo says that his only goal in 2015 is to help Alberto Contador become the first rider since Marco Pantani in 1998 to win the Giro-Tour double.
“The goal is to help Alberto. If anyone can do it, he can,” Rogers told VeloNews. “We’ll bring a strong squad to help Alberto. I hope to ride both the Giro and Tour, just like I did last year. That worked out pretty good.”
The statement was echoed by one of Tinkoff-Saxo’s sports directors, who says the team is putting together a squad to help Contador that may be the best the Spaniard has ever ridden with.
“We will bring a very strong team to help Alberto in both races,” said Tinkoff sport director Lars Michaelsen. “It will probably be one of Alberto’s strongest teams he’s ever had. We’re supporting him 100 percent.”
Rogers, the 35-year-old Australian, recently rode his home tour race, the Tour Down Under, and will next pin on a number at the Tour of Oman, as he builds up to the Giro in May.
“From here, I go to Oman, then the Giro and Tour. I’ve got a busy schedule this year,” he said. “I’m still in it to win it. I love it. I still love racing.”
