Romain Feillu and Bretage-Séché Environnement will part ways. Paris - Tours, where he missed the first echelon, marked the end of a two-year collaboration. But not the end of its career.
"Our relationship was not the best," Romain Feillu tells l'Equipe. "I told about y displeasure to learn through Twitter that I was not among the names selected for the Tour. They were not too pleaed with me."
Romain Feillu also willingly admits that he has also followed his own path.
"I have not followed the course that was planned in July for riders who were not doing the Tour de France," he said. "My wife booked a holiday at the sea believing that I would do the Tour, and due to my disappointment, I preferred to be a father which has probably turned against me but I have no regrets."
Romain Feillu will therefore not wear the new jersey of Fortuneo - Vital Concept, the new name of the team led by Emmanuel Hubert. But at 31, the former Yellow Jersey holder (2008) and winner of this year's Route Adélie where he beat Nacer Bouhanni, does not intend to hang up his bike. "I will continue," he said.
He had renewed contacts with sports director Hilaire Van der Schueren, with whom he has maintained excellent relations since his time at the Vacansoleil team (2010-2013). But more likely, Romain Feillu will be of interest for the French continental teams (3rd division), such as Roubaix - Lille or Auber 93 (which will lose the French champion Steven Tronet to Fortuneo). If he joins the latter team, the two sprinters will reverse roles
Anyway, at 31, Romain Feillu hopes to bounce back even if he has not managed to extend his time at Bretagne Séché Environnement. "Since late 2011, I had problem that dragged on and it was not until 2013 that I had surgery for appendicitis that was suddenly diagnosed. All this slowed me down."
A stage of the Ronde de l'Oise (2014) was his only very minor success between June 2011 and the Route Adélie last April. "The season did not have a bad start but after my victory, I have not had the program I was hoping for," said Romain Feillu who also injured his hand in the spring.
Romain Feillu now asks himself good question, "How can I bring the team more?" If he joins a French team, even in the third division, he knows what to expect.
"There would be no prospect of doing the Tour de France or even Paris - Nice, but the Coupe de France races suit me well and it is better to shine there."
