Reinier Honig has been elected as a board member of the Association of Professional Cyclists (VVBW) in the Netherlands. The professional rider wants to increase the support for the riders.
Honig was asked by President Bobbie Traksel to commit himself to the association for professional riders. In the past, riders like Erik Dekker and Servais Knaven have been active in the riders union. They stopped when they moved into team managements.
"What I want to achieve is above all that riders with problems come to us. Because we can do a lot for them, but we must know what is happening," Honig tells Wielerflits. "And I guess I'm the right person because I'm in the peloton."
33-year-old Honig has spent the last two seasons at Roompot Oranje Peloton. For next season, he has found a new team which he hopes to reveal soon.
Another important ares for Honig is the collective agreement for professional cyclists. The professional teams nullied the agreement several years ago and since then VVBW and the cycling teams have bee negotiating.
"I'm happy to step up for other riders. And I think it's good for me to be working with other matters in addition to riding my bike. Now VVBW has more people. We can divide tasks, so I'm still a cyclist at 100%," said Honig about his new unpaid job.
