Miguel Angel Rubiano (1984) is looking for a new team. The late demise of Team Colombia has left him on the market but he is still hopefult that he will remain active next year.
The Colombian rider confirms his situation.
"This year was a little difficult and long, because I think it is the year I have done most racing. Still I do not know my future because I still have no team at this time. I always had faith in Team Colombia. Even the sports minister Andres Botero said at the Vuelta a Espana that the team would continue with half the budget," he tells Biciciclismo.
Rubiano wants to show optimism in a difficult time.
"At the moment I have contacted some teams I know, but there are only few open spots and it was too late. I have some hope that something comes out. I have that faith. If not, I hope to find a team here in Colombia, always hoping to go back to Europe. I was very close to joining the team that signedLeonardo Duque (Delko Marseille) but in the end it was impossible," he says.
Rubiano preferred to wait until the end for the possible continuation of Team Colombia.
"We always had hope. I learned about the demise on October 17 and then everything fell apart because I knew it was hard to find a team. I even had opportunities to sign for the minimum but I decided to continue with Team Colombia because I have a family to support. At this point, I find myself in a situation where if a team tells me to sign I will do so with close eyes because I have no more possibilities," he says.
"I had an even more difficult situation in 2010 but it was different then as I had no children. I was married and went to a continental team. Now it is more difficult because it is not worth to take my daughters to a continental team," he adds.
In any case, he knows that his life can take a new direction.
"I will continue my preparation, train and wait for a team. I've even talked to some friends in Europe that are perhaps interested in some activity in Colombia. Or I could start a new activity as a sports coach or I would remain connected to cycling," he concludes.
Rubiano won a stage of the Giro d'Italia in 2012 and was national champion last year. In 2015, he was sixth in the Route du Sud and tenth in the Tour de Luxembourg. His teams were Panaria (2006-2007), Centri della Calzatura (2008-2009), Team Meridiana (2010), D'Angelo Antenucci (2011), Androni (2012-2013) and Team Colombia (2014-2015).
