Peter Sagan is certainly the hottest name on the transfer market among the riders running out of their contracts by the end of the current season, and according to Belgian media, after being linked with the Fernando Alonso Cycling Team and Tinkoff-Saxo, the Slovakian superstar would sport the baby blue Astana outfit from next year.
Despite some rumors which emerged this week, suggesting that the Cannondale rider has already closed a deal with a Danish WorldTour team, according to Belgian media the Kazakh squad would be his final destination.
While it seemed almost impossible that the 24-year old rider would extend a contract with his current team, Cannondale, he was linked with several teams during the spring classics season, especially Tinkoff-Saxo, Astana and the Fernando Alonso project. Several months ago, however, the Kazakh team suggested that they were unlikely to agree on Sagan’s high financial demands.
While it still hasn’t been confirmed that Sagan would ride for Astana next season, Sporza.be points out to his close and warm relationship with their grand tour captain Vincenzo Nibali maintained from the times when both cyclists rode for Liquigas.
Even though the 24-year Slovak didn’t point out to any particular outfit, he suggested that his final decision should be regarded a surprise what probably excludes Tinkoff-Saxo.
“First it was BMC, then Alonso and now Tinkoff-Saxo, but we will provide a surprise in the end,” Sagan said, according to Sporza.be.
In the same time, Dutch media suggest that Luis Leon Sanchez, currently riding for Caja Rural team after being released from Belkin, would be another rider to join Astana for 2015 season. They didn’t reveal, however, any source of such information.
