The start of today’s stage saw an early crash involving IAM Cycling and Kristoff Goddaert in particular. He quickly regained contact with the peloton, though. A few km into the stage, Bobbie Traksel (CSC), wearing the jersey of the most combative rider after his long escape yesterday, broke clear together with Tomohiro Kinoshita (JPN).
 

Early on the peloton showed little inclination towards reeling the fortune hunters back in and the duo quickly established a lead of more than 6 minutes. As the first KOM sprint approached, however, the gap narrowed and the two breakaway riders were caught on the slope towards the first KOM of the day.

Between the two climbs of the day several riders were dropped, including yesterday’s winner, Marcel Kittel. As the peloton powered towards the stage finish, Sagan (Canondale) was the first over the finish line in Al Bustan. Tony Gallopin (RadioShack-Leopard) was second and Martin Elmiger (IAM) came third. Sagan now leads Gallopin by 9 seconds overall, and also took charge of the Best Young Rider competition.
