Former Giro d’Italia winner Paolo Savoldelli has been summoned by the Italian Anti-Doping Agency on February the 12th due to a “development of investigations underway for violation of the anti-doping rules".
“The summons lists three possible anti-doping rule violations: 2.2: use or attempted use of a banned substance or prohibited method by an athlete and 2.8: Administration or attempted administration of banned substances or prohibited methods; and 3.2: for consulting and services from people who have been suspended."
Gazzetta.it believes that USADA may have handed over evidence that Savoldelli may have been involved with Dr Michele Ferrari while on the Discovery Channel Team.
Savoldelli spoke to Cyclingnews saying, "It'll be for the Di Luca case, we raced together (at LPR Brakes in 2008)," he told Cyclingnews. "We'll see what emerges. I just hope that they aren't trying to make a splash in the media about it.”
However, he also admits it could be to do with the ongoing Padova doping investigation that Ferrari was involved in.
"It could be linked Armstrong and the Padova investigation but I'm not worried. It's just a pain that I'll have to go all the way to Rome."
He won both the 2002 and 2005 Giro while riding for Discovery Channel.
