What could have been a triumphant day turned into a forgettable stage for Michele Scarponi (Lampre-Merida) at the Giro d’Italia on Monday. On the final descent of the day, Scarponi was hot on the heels of Blanco duo Kruijswijk and Gesink, but as the Dutch duo tumbled to the ground before him, Scarponi had no way of avoiding a crash.
Unfortunately, Scarponi’s bike was damaged in the crash and he was compelled to await the arrival of his teammate, Stortoni, who passed him his bicycle. Aided by teammate, Niemec, Scarponi subsequently tried to bridge the gap to the leaders of the stage caused by his crash but in vain.
“Some riders crashed right in front of me and I instinctively clutched my brakes and ended up on the ground,” Scarponi told Tuttobiciweb.it after the stage. “It was a pity because I had to wait for Stortoni to arrive and then chase the riders in front. I lost some time due to the accident, but I don’t intend to throw in the towel. Right now I’m in some pain because of the crash, but it’ll pass.”
