Michele Scarponi has always come across as smiling and cheerful, but at the finish of today's Giro stage he did not quite managed to hide an obvious grimace of pain and disappointment:
"I tried but I could not save myself. The other day I had a bad crash, I honestly was hoping to feel less pain I feel rather too much to be with the best. I'm sorry, I had a very different Giro in mind. I'm disappointed because I could not limit the damage, but in the next few days I hope to catch up. You will come to Trieste I hope? In the meantime I thank all the fans that today in my local area came out with all of their encouragement. I wish I could have done better than have a terrible day."
To defend the colors of Astana, it is now up to young Fabio Aru, who said of today's stage:
"How was the stage? Tough, tough, tough. I stayed with the front group and I had a hard time. I am very sorry for Michele, who remains our captain. I continue to live day-to-day riding. I'm young, I still have much to learn.”
