Wednesday witnessed the longest stage of the Giro del Trentino; 224.8 km starting in Sillian and with a summit finish on the Vetriolo Terme. The day also saw disappointing performances by the Lampre-Merida team.
Several escape attempts marked the opening phases of the stage but at the foot of the final, decisive ascent of the day, the main contenders for overall victory were together at the front of the reduced peloton.
On the Vetriolo Terme ascent, Siutsou (SKY) initiated the winning attack and went on to claim a splendid stage victory.
For Team Lampre-Merida the stage was less brilliant as only Przemyslaw Niemiec was able to stay with the front group and only up to about 3 km from the arrival and he finished the race in 14th place,1'07 " behind Siutsou. Michele Scarponi fared even worse and reached the finish line with a deficit of 4'19".
“Honestly, I was hoping to do better on today's last climb,” said Scarponi after the stage. “Until midway through the final ascent my sensations were still good but then the rhythm increased in the front group and that was too much for me and I had to give up all hopes of remaining with the best. I am sure that I have prepared in the best manner possible for the Giro d'Italia but maybe the workload to date has not yet been fully absorbed by my body. During the next few days of racing I will need to find the brilliance that I was hoping for today. I’m not demoralized and I'll continue with unflagging determination."
