Former Giro d’Italia winner Michele Scarponi joined a breakaway in Tirreno-Adriatico. Team-mate Ukranian Andrey Grivko helped the team captain in the move which gave Scarponi room to try a solo move on the last climb.
It wasn’t a complete success for the Italian Astana captain as he finished the stage 18th after being caught by the favourites on the last climb of the day.
"The start was uphill and I knew whoever escaped with me would be a strong rider,” he said.
The breakaway group gained a total advantage of 7 minutes and Scarponi tried to use this advantage to solo to the finish line with a attack on the climb of Terminillo, a mountain with a maximun gradient of 15%.
The final result of the stage have made Michele Scarponi to advance in the overall GC of the race so that he is now 18th. The gap to the stage winner and leader of Tirreno-Adriatico Nairo Quintana of Colombia is now 2 minutes and 14 seconds.
