Andreas Schillinger showed a very good performance at the 99th edition of the German classic Rund um Köln, providing his team with the 14th podium result of this season. In the sprint of a breakaway group, the 31-years-old German from BORA – ARGON 18 scored the third place behind favorite Tom Boonen (Quick Step-Etixx) and Edward Theuns (Topsport-Vlaanderen).
Schillinger belonged to a large group of 23 riders who went clear from the rest of the peloton after 50 kilometers. Although the gap was never bigger than 2:30 minutes, the group was able to stay ahead of the field. 40 kilometers before the finish, five riders attacked from the leading group - including Andreas Schillinger. The quintet reached the six final laps in the city of Cologne and was able to secure a lead of one minute at the start of the final lap.
"Andreas rode a very smart race and he managed his energy very well. I think that was crucial in the fast race today. After his long training block, he is currently in very good shape and, therefore, we focused on him in race situations like these. We assumed already before the race that a bunch sprint was rather unlikely today. The third place is a great result for Andreas and it’s perfectly fine for us given the course of the race", comments Andre Schulze, Sport Director of BORA – ARGON 18.
