Andy Schleck's bad season continues all the way to the very end. Scheduled to ride both Milan-Turin and Il Lombardia this week, the Luxembourger didn't turn up at the start of the former race earlier today due to a sinus infection.
Andy Schleck has had two nightmare seasons and apparently, there's no end to his travails. Today he didn't start the Milan-Turin which was set to be one of the important end-of-season races that should kick start his winter training for the 2014 season.
The Luxembourger is suffering from sinusitis, team spokesman Tim Vanderjeugd told Cyclingnews in a text message. “He's on antibiotics for 5 days. Last minute decision not start, to not risk Lombardy.”
Ever since his crash in the 2012 Criterium du Dauphiné, the 2010 Tour de France winner has been unable to find back the legs that allowed him to finish on the podium in the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Tours de France. He showed signs of improvement in the Tour de France where he finished 20th and had hoped that the completion of a grand tour and a good block of racing during the autumn would set him up for a better 2014.
He got through the USA Pro Challenge in Colorado but since then he has failed to finish a race. He abandoned the GP Ouest France - Plouay and both of the Canadian WorldTour races. He was dealt a further blow when it was announced that the only Luxembourgish place in the Worlds road race was given to young Bob Jungels.
Today's Milan-Turin and Sunday's Il Lombardia were expected to end his season but the final block of racing has got off to a bad season with today's non-start. If he recovers well, he should be back in the Radioshack jersey for one final time on Sunday before joining the new Trek team for next season.
