Daniel Schorn was close to his first big professional victory when he finished 5th in the Druivenkoers Overijse. Having made it into the right group in the finale, the Austrian tried to do a long sprint but was narrowly beaten inside the final 100m.
The Belgian race Druivenkoers – Overijse kicked off the autumn classics for Team NetApp – Endura. After a hard-fought race Jonas Van Genechten (Lotto – Belisol) clinched victory in a sprint involving a small breakaway group. He triumphed after a distance of 196 kilometers ahead of Jasper de Buyst and Tom van Asbroeck (both Topsport Vlaanderen). Daniel Schorn from Team NetApp – Endura consolidated the good form he has shown in the ongoing second half of the season by sprinting to fifth place. Overall, NetApp – Endura was very active in shaping the race and was represented in all the attacks right up to the final stretch.
“Today we entered the race with the clear objective of being involved in deciding the placings. We wanted to play an active role in shaping the course of the race right from the start. Cesare [Benedetti] initially managed to put this into practice very well in the first big group. This group had every chance of making it to the finish. As the group was forming, it was Daniel’s task to lead the team, and in his first attack he had two allies at hand in Ralf [Matzka] and Alex [Krieger]. In the final group it was unfortunately all down to him and he risked everything. He exploited the very technical final stretch brilliantly and opted for a very long sprint. Unfortunately he was beaten less than 100 meters before the finish line, but given the way today’s race turned out, we’re very happy with this fifth place”, explains Sport Director Christian Pömer, summing up the race.
