Since 2012 Michael Albasini has been riding for Orica-GreenEdge and in his time with the Australian team he has established himself as a consistent key rider. In the past season, the 34-year-old again scored important wins and top results.
Albasini won two stages of the Tour de Romandie and spent three days in the leader's jersey at his home race. In general, Switzerland turned out to be a good place for the stage hunter. At the GP Kanton Aargau (1.HC), only Alexander Kristoff (Katusha) was faster than Albasini and in the Tour de Suisse he was in the top ten twice.
In addition to those results, he was third at Fléche Wallonne, his second podium finish in the major classics. "I am pretty satisfied with my season," Albasini told radsport-news.com.
That he is unable to make a completely positive assessment is mainly due to two races. "My crash 300 meters from the finish at the Swiss Championships and of course the withdrawal from the Tour de France were disappointing," said Albasini who broke his arm in a crash on the 5th stage of the French grand tour. When the veteran made his comeback almost seven weeks later, he was unable to achieve any noteworthy results in the second half of the season.
Nevertheless, the team management at Orica GreenEdge know what Albasini can offer and they offered him a new two-year contract. In the coming season, he wants to build on the strong first part of 2015. "I want to win as much as possible with Orica as a domestique and show myself when the opportunity presents itself," Albasini announced.
