Lampre-Merida seemed to have hit the jackpot in today's stage of the Vuelta a Espana when they had placed both Przemyslaw Niemiec and Jose Serpa in the right breakaway on a day that suited them well. However, the climbers both were on a bad day and unable to follow the best already on the penultimate climb.
When the 23-rider break was created in today's stage of the Vuelta a Espana, Lampre-Merida found themselves in a great position as both Przemyslaw Niemiec and Jose Serpa had made it into the group. When the group was whittled down to 12 riders on the penultimate climb, however, they were both dropped.
Instead, Lampre-Merida focused on GC rider Winner Anacona. It ended as a bad day for the Italian team as the Colombian suffered and dropped to 9th in the overall standings.
"Everything was perfect for us in the first part of the stage since two good climbers like Serpa and Niemiec succeeded in joining the winning breakaway," sports director Joxean Fernandez Matxin said. "Unfortunately, they were dropped from the lead group on the second climb. It's a pity, because we lost our chances to obtain a top result in this stage.
"Anacona gritted his teeth and limited his losses to the best riders in the GC."
