Mirko Selvaggi sprinted to sixth in the first stage of Ruta del Sol. The final saw a huge crash.

"We were going over 70 km/h an hour," says Enrico Gasparotto. "With wind in the back and a slightly downhill road, someone touched wheels and down we went."

Marco Minnaard, Danilo Napolitano and Gasparotto were among the riders on the deck but they are okay.

Worst off was Jan Ghyselinck. He really hurt his hand. He will try to do the time trial this afternoon but can't really hold the handlebars properly.

Team doctor Miek arrives tonight and will take Jan to hospital for x-rays to scan for possible fractures.
