Ramon Sinkeldam was one of the riders to be hit in the Giant-Alpecin pre-season car crash. He wasable to return fairly early in Tirreno-Adriatico, but the crash has had lasting affects. We caught up with the Dutchman before stage one of the Tour of Britain in Glasgow.
First of all, we asked the Giant-Alpecin rider how he was after the crash, the kept him out of racing until March.
“It’s getting better and better actually, the first few races were hectic in the spring classics. I suffered a lot from fear actually, breaking too early and doing things like that. But ever since the end of the spring, I’ve been getting better and better.”
His teammate John Degenkolb was much worse off and almost lost a finger. Ramon was part of the leadout that saw Degenkolb take a big comeback win in Arctic Race of Norway. We asked Sinkeldam about that stage win for his friend.
“We saw John’s win coming for a while as he was feeling really good. In Norway, he was second on the first few days so it was really nice to see him cross the line first on the final day.”
Turning our attention to today's race, Sinkeldam, who would usually sprint in Degenkolb and Nikias Arndt's absence, says he may not get many chances for himself due to Tom Dumoulin's GC hopes being the bigger goal.
“Normally I will do the sprints but we are not really focussing on them as a team. There are lots of the top sprinters here but for sure if any stages work out as bunch sprints, the guys will do their best to put me in the best position and I will see what I can do from there.”
