Team Sky went into the first mountain stage of the Tour de Pologne with big hopes for Sebastian Henao and Philip Deignan and the British team put in an aggressive showing. However, no rider from the team finished in the front group and this was way below expectations for the ambitious Brits.

Team Sky showed attacking intent on stage five at the Tour of Poland but were unable to breach the top positions on a tough summit finish.

Sebastian Henao and Kanstantsin Siutsou both jumped clear of a fast-paced peloton during an exciting finish but were reeled in as the stage was decided on Slovakian roads.

Rafal Majka (Tinkoff-Saxo) unleashed a perfectly-timed effort to win the stage and move to within a second of the lead in his home tour.

The Pole kept his head as his rivals attacked around him, waiting until the final metres before edging out Movistar duo Benat Intxausti and Ion Izagirre on the climb to Strbske Pleso.

Overnight yellow jersey holder Petr Vakoc (Omega Pharma – Quick-Step) found himself distanced just prior to the flamme rouge but dug deep to remain one second ahead of Majka.

Philip Deignan suffered a small fall during the penultimate climb as the Irishman saw his rear wheel slip on a wet uphill switchback. Henao attacked to keep the pace high with 28km to go, pushing onwards over the top of the climb before being caught by the Tinkoff-Saxo-led peloton.

With 5km to go Siutsou accelerated but was unable to distance his rivals on the power climb. Dario Cataldo led the team home in 28th, 15 seconds back on Majka.

"The stage today didn't go as well as it could have done," admitted Sports Director Gabriel Rasch after the finish. "The riders are coming back after a long break without racing. Sebastian tried to go clear on the penultimate climb. Unfortunately he was alone in his effort as no one went with him.

"Philip crashed on a corner but he was able to come back to the bunch, although he did lose some time at the finish. Tomorrow is another day. It will be tough with the constant undulations but we will give it a good go."
