A disappointing season for Team Sky is about to come to an end. Again the team was unable to make an impact in a major race when David Lopez ran out of legs in the finale of Milan-Turin.
Team Sky were unable to influence the closing kilometres at Milano-Torino after an action-packed day of racing in Italy.
David Lopez had looked to follow the moves as the race came to a head in an exciting showdown on the Colle di Superga, but it was Giampaolo Caruso who perfectly timed his efforts to overcome a stellar field and claim victory.
Rinaldo Nocentini (Ag2r-La Mondiale) and Daniel Moreno (Katusha) rounded out the podium places in Turin, three and nine seconds respectively behind Caruso (Katusha).
Recent Vuelta a Espana contenders Fabio Aru, Joaquim Rodriguez and Alberto Contador completed the top six after an exciting finish which saw Contador and Aru go toe to toe briefly on the steep finishing climb.
Kanstantsin Siutsou saw his chances scuppered following a crash with 35km to go, forcing the Belarusian out of contention.
After the race Sports Director Dan Frost talked about the race and gave an update on Siutsou following his crash.
“The plan today was to ride for David Lopez and we had Kosta as a back-up,” he confirmed. “With about 35km to go on the approach to the climbs there was a crash with Kosta and it was impossible for him to get back to the group after that. He was in a bit of pain afterwards with his ribs so we’re going to get him checked out.
“David was in there and felt okay but he himself admitted that there were riders out there who were just stronger on the day. He tried to follow the moves on the final climb but the legs weren’t there. So it a tough day but we’ll regroup and get ready for Lombardy on Sunday.”
