When Garmin-Sharp had missed the break in today's stage of the Tour de France, the team started to chase hard in an attempt to bring it back. In the end, they managed to have Tom-Jelte Slagter bridge across but the Dutchman failed to finish it off and could only manage 9th.
With Andrew Talansky out of the race, Garmin-Sharp are searching for stage wins in this year's Tour de France and with no real climbers on their roster, today's stage was one of their best opportunities. Hence, the team worked extremely hard to almost bring back a 12-rider group so that Tom-Jelte Slagter could bridge the gap.
In the end, the Dutchman could only manage 9th.
"I was good enough to be there but not good enough to win," he told NOS. "It was very difficult to join the break as there was a headwind so you risked blowing yourself up. I did what I could, but I couldn't take the win."
