After having a 2015 to forget, Cannondale-Garmin’s Tom-Jelte Slagter is having a September to remember, as he has hit a purple patch of form just before the Worlds Road Race in just over a week. The only problem is, he hasn’t been selected for that race.
Slagter was 12th overall in August’s Eneco Tour, but things really came to life two weeks ago, where he won two stages and finished third on GC at the Tour of Alberta. Things continued to go well when he was fourth and tenth in the GPs of Quebec and Montreal, against significantly tougher opposition.
The 26 year old Dutchman has spoken to VeloNews about why most of his 2015 didn’t go so well, and his aims for the rest of the season.
“The main thing during the last winter was for me, a problem with the knee, which started me a little bit later,” Slagter told VeloNews. “I had some problems still in the beginning of January, so it was a bit of a slow start. I think since halfway through the season, I’m going better and better and I think the form is there now.”
Slagter will end his season on a high as he clearly has form and this will give him a huge boost coming into 2016, where he leads Cannondale-Garmin in the Ardennes Classics for the first time, as Dan Martin has left for pastures new.
“That’s what I want for the future,” he said. “Last year I did good results in Flèche Wallonne and in Liège, so I hope I can make another step to the very best guys.”
