Staf Scheirlinckx, a 34-year-old Flemish rider previously rode for Accent Jobs-Wanty, has chosen to hang up his wheels, according to Sporza.
Scheirlinckx, a good rider on cobblestones, finds himself hard to find a good contract, due to the decline in european cycling, "It's not good with cycling. Many teams stop and so the supply of riders is much larger than the demand for it. And the teams are taking advantage of this. The wage of riders thus fall." Accent Jobs-Wanty, now known as Wanty-Groupe Gobert, has taken this advantage to sign a few decent riders cheaply, like Leukemans and Seeldraeyers.
Scheirlinckx could find a new team provided he accepts UCI minimum wage, but he decides its not acceptable, as being a professional means a lot of sacrifices and risks, such as family time and possible injuries.
Scheirlinckx got a top 10 result once in both Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix, as well as multiple results in smaller classics. His elder brother, Bert Scheirlinckx also decided to retire after last season.
