Derny rider Cees Stam who crashed hard at the Six-Days of Amsterdam, is no longer in a life-threatening condition. His grandson Yoeri Havik who won the race overall, is looking forward to celebrating the victory with his grandfather.
Derny Rider Cees Stam is no longer in danger. Stam was transported to the hospital in critical condition on the second night of the Six-Days of Amsterdam after an accident on the track.
Meanwhile, his health is improving, the team of Yoeri Havik, his grandson and winner of the event with Niki Terpstra, reports.
"We can now stick to the normal visiting hours which means that there is no life-threatening situation anymore. He is also able to wake up by himself each night. Hopefully we can all be together in one place and enjoy this victory when he is fully recovered again.”
For the 23-year old rider was a difficult week.
"My grandfather never makes mistakes so I thought it was weird that he just crashed," he looks back on the accident. "But when another went over him and he did no longer breathe, I really started to worry. He looked very strange and the color on his face was not good. I ran away immediately because I really could not look at it. The next day I went to the hospital to visit him. He looked much better which was very important for my state of mind. Then I decided to continue. Whether there are five or six people at his bed makes no real differnence. "
