Despite rumours to the contrary earlier on Saturday, Sunday’s Gent-Wevelgem will without doubt be raced after race director Frank Hoste made an inspection of the parcours on Saturday.
The course of the WorldTour race will be amended, however, as the start has been switched to Gistel, to the north-west of Gent, whereby the total distance covered by the riders will be reduced by 45 km.
Hoste assembled representatives of the teams on Saturday afternoon to announce the switch.
Additional snow has been forecast for Saturday evening with temperatures plunging to around -3, a decision will be made on Sunday morning before the race over the possible exclusion of the two ascents of the Casselberg.
"We will not make the mistake of Milan-San Remo" Hoste told Het Nieuwsblad on Saturday. "The health and safety of the riders have priority."
