In his second season with Movistar, Jasha Sütterlin has developed into a strong domestique in many terrains. The German showed his qualities in eleven WorldTour races, including four of the five monuments. Moreover, he made the world aware of himself with a tenth place the Bayern Rundfahrt (2.HC). However, more was possible in the only German stage race More, which was won his teammate Alex Dowsett.
"At the Bayern Rundfahrt I would have liked to finish better in the overall standings but I messed it up in the time trial," said Sütterlin who was eleventh in his favourite discipline on the penultimate day of the race in Haßfurt, in an interview with radsport-news.com.
Sütterlin was aiming for another top result at the German Road Championships in Bensheim. "However, it was too difficult for me as a lone rider in the race," said Sütterlin who had previously gone off course in the time trial and so had had to settle for 8th.
However, things went according to plan during the autumn season. "I was in very good condition at the WorldTour races in Canada and at Worlds,” Sütterlin said. He was rewarded for his services with bronze after he finished third with his Movistar teammates in the team time trial in Richmond.
In his third season with Alejandro Valverde’s and Nairo Quintana’s team, Sütterlin does not only want to work as a domestique but also wants to achieve personal results. "I want to continue my natural development and hope for one or two top-five results. Ideally, I want to ride for a win too,” said the 23-year-old, who is aiming for an early start to the season - either at the Tour de San Luis or the Tour Down Under.
Among his early highlights, the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix are likely to feature prominently. "Even though I missed something in the last 30 kilometers, I felt very good at the Tour of Flanders," said Sütterlin.
Furthermore, he has a good chance to make a Grand Tour debut. "The team management has indicated that I can do either the Giro or the Vuelta," revealed Sütterlin, who also wants to improve his time trial after he mainly showed progress in the mountains in 2015.
"Recently, I have neglected the time trials somewhat. But I'll focus more on that and do more moto training,” he announced.
