Bad news for Zdenek Stybar: the world champion has crashed in the Kermiscross in Ardooie. He has hurt his shoulder and will undergo surgery on his ligaments tonight. A few months ago, the Czech had a nasty crash in Ardooie during the Eneco Tour.
Sporza commentator Paul Herygers saw Zdenek Stybar's crash in Ardooie.
"In the third lap, Stybar was chasing behind Michael Vanthourenhout who had escaped," said the former world champion. "He pushed hard and in my opinion he made a small error in judgment. Stybar's pedal hit the barrier and both he and Dieter Vanthourenhout hit the ground."
"The world champion was lying on the ground. Soon it was clear that his right collarbone was hurt. And if you know the sport a little bit, that's not very promsing. It is a tragedy for the person Stybar."
Officials also assumed that the Czech had broken his collarbone but in the hospital it became clear that his ligaments had been affected. He will go under the knife tonight. Vanthourenhout suffered no major injuries in the crash.
For Zdenek Stybar, Ardooie seems to be cursed. After his horror crash in the Eneco Tour, he has again crashed in the West Flemish city. This time in the Kermiscross, a stone's throw from Stationsstraat where his face hit the asphalt in August.
After the Kermiscross, Zdenek Stybar planned to take several weeks off. This weekend he will get married. In December, the world champion wanted to do his next cyclocross races.
