The Tour du Limousin was a success for Romain Combaud (Armee) who won the mountains jersey and finished 11th overall and Theo Vimpere (Auber 93) who was the best local rider.
" The day was difficult," Combaud told Directvelo. "I really wanted to be in the break. I was 20 " behind but I still had not done anything in this Tour du Limousin. I never found myself in the good moves. I wanted to be in front and take bonifications to move up overall. We had Quentin (Pacher) who was tenth, and therefore a bit more protected than me. I was in the big group of those who were 20" behind.
"I seized the opportunity, I never really believed too much even though the agreement was good. I talked with Axel Domont since I was a disturbing element of this escape, being only 20" behind. I scored seconds so I was back in the top 10.
"I hesitated a moment to sit up. I decided with my Sporting Director (Cedric Barre, ed) not to do it. We said that Bardiani had to be tired after chasing for two days. I knew that team was not the only ones interested in a sprint finish. I was lucky that they only caught us on the last climb. Otherwise it would have been hard for me to stay in the wheels.
"I was informed about the fact that Auber had two riders in pursuit. I was told that if they managed to return, there could be a small moment of hesitation behind. Then Steven Tronet only had not to do better than third for me to win the Tour du Limousin. But it wasn't to be so. I made a good day, I am satisfied.
"I had absolutely no plans about the KOM jersey. But once I won the first sprint, I said "Come on, I'll take them." The Roompot rider (Etienne Van Empel, ed) and I were doing them, but it was not full gas. It's always nice to win this kind of thing, especially as the Tour du Limousin is a renowned race.
"I will now go to the Tour of Poitou-Charentes with other objectives to work more for sprinters. I am really motivated for the end of season. To find a top-level team will be complicated but I will at least try to make an impression for next year.""
"With Steven (Tronet), we said we wanted to attack early," Vimpere told Directvelo. "The races are going well for us when there is action, and it's pretty hard. So, it is up to us to create it when nothing happens. We wanted to attack but no other team was joining us. It's a shame because it could have been enough to change the final, especially as the circuit lend itself to attacks.
"I would have liked to win a stage in the Tour du Limousin or make a Top 10 overall. But this is not a race for my characteristics. The groups are too big and I'm not fast enough in a sprint. It's not that it is too difficult, we had the same elevation changes in Tour de l'Ain (3rd and 6th in stages and 7th overall, ed). But these are not mountains, it goes up and down continuously. And there is always at least forty guys in the sprint. I will now compete in the Grand Prix de Fourmies and the Tour du Doubs."
