To begin with, however, things appeared to be following the script. The opening Madison of the evening saw but little change among the top teams as Pozzato/Mouris gained a lap on the peloton. Between the top teams, though, status quo remained.
In the final Madison, the grandiloquently labelled Koppelkoers XL, all that changed, though. The leading two teams, De Ketele/De Pauw and Terpstra/Havik were busy keeping a watchful eye on each other. Regrettably, from their point of view, they occupied themselves with little else. This, evidently, gave other teams an unexpected chance to shine. German Christian Grasmann and French rider Morgan Kneisky but all their experience into good use as they gained no less than two laps on the two leading teams to snatch the overall lead midway through the race and, seemingly, blasting the general classification wide open.
