Dane Simon Andreassen won the World Cyclo-Cross Championships for juniors in Tabor. Big favourite Eli Iserbyt started the race furiously, but could not maintain his pace and had to settle for second far behind the Dane. Dutchman Max Gulickx had to be content with a bronze medal.
Iserbyt went on the attack right from the beginning with an acceleration already in the first lap. However, it was impossible for him to continue at that raging speed. Andreassen made use of the bars to build and advantage and after 26 minutes of racing, he had rejoined Iserbyt.
The pre-race favourite managed to stay with the Dane but after yet another setback he could not muster the energy to get back. Iserbyt again proved that it is no easy thing to be the big favourite.
After the race, Andreassen reflected on his performance: "I rode the perfect race. I knew he got closer and this surface suits me. Technically I had an advantage," said the Dane.
Yesterday Iserbyt said that only a gold medal would satisfy his ambitions but in the end he had to settle for silver.
