Having already crashed in stage 1 and punctured in stage 2, Ben Swift was hit by more bad luck in today's third stage of the Tour de Pologne. The Brit went down in a crash with 1km to go but luckily he is ready to go for glory in tomorrow's final sprint stage.
Ben Swift saw his bid for victory halted by a crash on stage three at the Tour of Poland while team-mate Salvatore Puccio spent a strong day in the breakaway.
Swift saw his run of bad luck at the event continue after a touch of wheels inside the final kilometre saw the Yorkshireman brought down as he jostled for position into a right-hand corner ahead of the sprint finish in Rzeszow.
The 174-kilometre stage saw Team Sky hit the front from the outset as Salvatore Puccio pushed up the road in a four-man move as the race departed Kielce. The Italian rode hard, but with a number of motivated teams giving chase, a bunch kick always looked likely.
A frantic sprint decided the day and it was Theo Bos (Belkin) who emerged victorious with a well-timed jump on a tricky circuit. Luka Mezgec (Giant-Shimano) and Michael Matthews (Orica-GreenEdge) claimed the final podium places just behind the flying Dutchman.
The result ensured Petr Vakoc (Omega Pharma – Quick-Step) retained his yellow jersey and 27-second advantage at the top of the standings.
Sports Director Gabriel Rasch talked us through the day and gave an update on Swift following his crash.
"Ben is fine," he told TeamSky.com. "He's a bit sore but he is okay after the crash, which is good news. He had a coming together with another rider who brought him down.
"We wanted to try and get either Puccio or Josh (Edmondson) into the break. We've seen that breaks here are not easy to control and there are not many teams who are willing to do the work to control things. Salvatore did a good job but in the end they were caught on the finishing circuits.
"Tomorrow it's pretty flat again but a really long stage at 236km. We have another circuit at the finish which is pretty technical. We'll look to try again for Ben and see if we can turn our luck around."
