Ben Swift has made Milan-Sanremo and the World Championships his big aims for the 2015 season, as he told Sky Sports News HQ.
Swift was third in Sanremo and 12th in the Worlds in 2014, and the 2015 Worlds course in Richmond, Virginia suits the Brit better, as there is less climbing in the lap.
“There is less climbing than Ponferrada (238m compared to 306m in Ponferrada), so that is going to be a target for the end of the year,” the 27-year-old Yorkshireman said at Team Sky’s winter training camp in Mallorca.
“Last year left me hungry for more because I had a good ride, but not a brilliant ride. There were little bits of stuff that I could have changed and done better, maybe in the build-up to it or actually in the race.”
“I was happy about having it as a focus and I went well on the day, and it gave me a bit more confidence to say that I can potentially target a race like that.”
Swift, as a sprinter, is pleased to see the arrival of two more fast men, Andy Fenn and Elia Viviani, to the team, and says between the three of them, they can help each other take some big wins.
“I think the emphasis on the sprinting has stepped up a lot because we did slip away a little bit [in 2014]. If you look at our first couple of years [of Team Sky], that’s where most of our results came from, that sprint group.”
“In a pure, out-and-out straight-line sprint, he [Viviani] is quicker than I am, but I think we can work really well together," he added. "Some races we will be together, some races we will be separate.”
