After it was confirmed that composed solely of a diabetics team Novo Nordisk secured UCI Pro Continental licence for 2014 season, the green light was given to their admirable mission of spreading awareness about the disease through sport rivalry.
Based in the United States the Novo Nordisk team, functioning in the world of cycling since 2004 and previously known under the name of Team Type 1 – Sanofi, is mainly sponsored by Danish producer of diabetes care equipment and medications. Thus there is no surprise that besides improving the results on a purely sporting basis, one of its most important goals is to spread awareness of the type 1 diabetes and proving that it is not only possible to lead a normal life with the disease, but to compete as a professional athletes.
Still, the decision to build the team roster for 2013 that would include diabetes sufferers only, has forced several successful riders to change their outfits and there were concerns that the team will be significantly weakened by this move. Fortunately team’s results remained on a satisfying level and there are certain plans of making further improvements in the upcoming season.
“The confirmation does not come as a surprise for us, but it feels good to fulfill all requirements in the first go already,” team manager Vassilli Davidenko said.
“The organization of the 2014 season is in full swing. As we received the license, we have a certain planning security and can now take the next steps.”
The team has yet to confirm its full roster for 2014.
