After just one season spent in the Omega Pharma-Quick Step outfit, Wout Poels is set to leave the team in order to pursue his personal goals and development. In such circumstances, his choice might be regarded at least slightly surprising, as according to Dutch media Team Sky is expected to be the next destination for the 26-year old climber.
Omega Pharma-Quick Step threw Poels a lifeline with a one-year contract after his former Vacansoleil team folded by the end of last season, and helped him to finally rebuild his disposition following a dramatic Tour de France crash back in 2012.
While dutifully riding in the supporting capacity for Rigoberto Uran in this year’s Giro d’Italia, the 26-year old Dutchman revealed that he had biggest ambitions for the future than just playing a domestique role and so his intention to change a team couldn’t be regarded surprising itself.
If the rumors circulating in Dutch media were eventually confirmed, however, Poels might find it difficult to significantly change his situation, as Team Sky is not famously known for providing their second-row riders with huge support.
The news hasn’t been confirmed by the 26-year old climber, who only claimed he has received an offer he couldn’t resist while explaining his departure from Omega Pharma-Quick Step.
British squad, however, didn’t hide their interest in signing Poels.
“I would like to work with him and help him develop,” Team Sky sports director Servais Knaven told Limburg regional broadcaster L1.
