According to WielerFlits.nl, the Netherlands wants to host the Road Cycling World Championships in 2021 in the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe which also hosted the Grand Départ of the Giro in 2002.
WielerFlits explains that the application initially concerned 2020 but that after meeting the UCI at the 2016 World Championships in Doha, the Dutch delegation has moved its request to 2021. The International Cycling Union explained that there is a good chance that the 2020 World Championships will take place outside Europe which will host the Worlds in 2017 (Bergen), 2018 (Innsbruck) and 2019 (Yorkshire).
For now, it is more about an intention than of a proper candidature. Firstly because the 2020 World Championships will be awarded at the 2017 World Championships while the 2021 nominations are due only on January 1, 2018. Secondly, former skater Renate Groenewold who is in charge of the project still needs to find 15 million euros to cover the costs.
The last time the World Championships were held in the Netherlands was in 2012. Philippe Gilbert won the road race while Tony Martin won his second title against the clock. It was also the first time that the team time trial took place, with Omega Pharma - Quick Step taking the win.
