After Limburg hosted the event in 2012, the road Worlds may return to the Netherlands in 2020 and 2028. Drenthe and Groningen have shown interest in the 2020 edition of the championships while the national federation wants to host the event in 2028.
There is chance that Groningen will host the 2020 road world championships. According to CyclingOnline, a local group led by Dick Heuvelman has taken the initiative to speak with the Dutch Federation KNWU about the plan. Earlier Drenthe also showed interest in organizing the 2020 World Championships. A recent study has shown that the Groningen plan is feasible.
"Now it is up to the local organizers to find money and capacity for a World Championships in Groningen," KNWU director Huib Loosterhuis said. The federation is ready to support the plan.
Drenthe and Groningen will probably face competition from Vicenza. La Gazzetta dello Sport reported earlier that the Italian city is in the running to host the 2020 Worlds.
Furthermore, the national federation have plans to hos the 2028 Worlds as they will celebrate their 100th anniversary that year.
