A brand new and brutally steep climb may be making its debut in the 2014 Vuelta a Espana. According to El Diario de Leon, the Alto de la Camperona which is known as the son of Angliru, will host the finish of the 14th stage on September 6.
While the courses for the next editions of the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia have both been unveiled, the course for the final grand tour of the season, the Vuelta a Espana, remains a secret until its official presentation in January. Several rumours have already circulated and the latest is that the race will make its first visit to the Alto de la Camperona.
According to El Diario de Leon, the 14th stage on September 6 will start in Torrelavega and finish at the top of the climb, 1597m above sea level. The newspaper reports that the climb was inspected by the Vuelta organizers in May and the inspectors reportedly compared it with the feared Alto de l'Angliru which was climbed on the penultimate stage of this year's race.
The climb starts from Sotillos de Sabero and has a brutal section of a little more than 3km where the gradient stays between 13% and 21%. Its toughness has earned it the nickname "The son of Angliru".
Until now, the only element of the route that has been confirmed, is that the race will take off from Jerez in Southern Spain, probably with a team time trial. In October, it was reported that the race may end in Compostela with an evening time trial, thus skipping its usual finish in Madrid.
Chris Horner won the 2010 edition of the race ahead of Vincenzo Nibali and Alejandro Valverde.
