Eight years after the last visit in the province of Almeria, the Vuelta a Espana should make its return for two days that will be important for the overall classification of the 2017 edition.
While the designs of the two stages that will cross the province are not known yet, Diario de Almeria reports that they will pass through the high mountains. The first stage should reach the summit of Calar Alto, a climb where Igor Anton won in 2006. Since then, the riders have been there in 2009 but back then it did not host the finish. Ryder Hesjedal won the stage to the top of the Alto de Velefique. This climb could also be part of the route of this stage.
The second stage will start in the lunar landscape of Desert de Tabernas and will reach the summit of Pico Veleta in the neighboring province of Granada.
