Today is D-day for Edward Theuns who fights for the victory in the Europe Tour at the Nationale Sluitingsprijs. "Whatever the outcome in the Sluitingsprijs will be, I am proud of my results and especially those in the spring," Theuns tells Sporza.
Edward Theuns (Topsport Vlaanderen-Baloise) emerged this season as "Mister Consistency" in the Europe Tour. He has been in the top 10 in a UCI race no less than 37 times!
And for dessert he may soon end up as the winner of the Europe Tour. "I am not too fussed about that ranking," Theuns told Sporza.
"In the team they think is important. Especially Walter (Planckaert, sports director) it is a big thing. The teams classification is almost sealed which is a very nice recognition for our team. It proves that we have had a very consustent season."
Theuns must close a gap of 16 points to leader Nacer Bouhanni. "It will be difficult to beat him. The fact that my friends Vanbilsen and Van Staeyen start with Cofidis? In the race, the rules of friendship don't work."
That friendship and team spirit is the key aspect at Topsport Vlaanderen-Baloise which became clear in Dwars door Vlaanderen. "That was the best moment of my season," said Theuns, who finished second to teammate Jelle Wallays.
"I never expected that I would finish on the podium of a Flemish classic son early in my carrer (he was also second in the Scheldeprijs, ed.). In time, I want to be there in De Ronde and Roubaix."
Under the wings of Fabian Cancellara,Theuns (24) hop to evolve further next season at Trek. "In the great classics I will try to support Cancellara as much as possible.
"It is also a happy reunion with Jasper Stuyven. During the Worlds in Florence I was his roommate for a few days. We know each other pretty well."
