Geraint Thomas claimed a bronze medal for Wales in the Commonwealth Games time trial as Alex Dowsett wrapped up the overall victory for England.
Thomas stopped the clock with a time of 47 minutes and 55.82 seconds after powering around the undulating 38.4km course around Glasgow in an average speed of 48.1km/hr.
That proved just 14.04 seconds slower than Dowsett, who produced a storming finish to seal his triumph with a 9.30sec advantage over Australia’s Rohan Dennis.
Thomas was the 49th of 60 riders to roll down the start ramp, and had set the fastest time of the day before Dennis and Dowsett narrowly bettered it.
Immediately after the race, he told the BBC:
“I was a bit unsure what to expect today really so soon after finishing the Tour de France, and although I didn’t feel fresh or zippy, fortunately I did feel strong and that I could smash it on the course.”
By the time Thomas had set off, his compatriot Luke Rowe was already well under way and his time of eventually proved enough for 17th overall.
Thomas’s medal was the third of the Games for a Team Sky rider and came on the back of Sir Bradley Wiggins’s silver medal for England in the team pursuit, which was followed by Peter Kennaugh’s silver medal for the Isle of Man in the points race 48 hours later.
