The UCI Road World Championship in Richmond will take part at the end of September and Belgian national coach Carlo Bomans has named three riders who will be selected for the event. Indeed, Greg van Avermaet (BMC Racing Team), Philippe Gilbert (BMC Racing Team) and Tom Boonen (Etixx-Quick Step) will be present in United States. Belgian coach to finalise team September 7.
"Obviously, the selection will be a function of the course," Bosmans said, according to Sporza. "Boonen, Gilbert and Van Avermaet are certainties if they are healthy and willing to work towards the World Championship. The majority of the squad will opt for the [two WorldTour races in] Québec and Montréal and they need to know if they have to travel or not."
Greg van Avermaet is the best Belgian this season. In 2015, Van Avermaet placed second of the Strade Bianche. He got his first victory of the season on stage 3 of Tirreno–Adriatico. In April, he went on to get the third step of the podium in the Tour of Flanders after dropping Peter Sagan (Tinkoff-Saxo) while chasing for the winning duet in the finale. A week later, he had a prestigious podium placing at Paris–Roubaix, finishing third after being on the attack for the final kilometers. On 17 July 2015, Van Avermaet won his first Tour stage victory. It was the 13th stage of the Tour de France going from Muret to Rodez. Van Avermaet finished first, right before green jersey Peter Sagan.
In 2015, Gilbert raked in his first victory of the season at the Giro d'Italia, besting the lead group on a sharp incline at the end of Stage 12. The BMC Racing Team rider repeated on Stage 18, where he participated to the early break. After being dropped on the last climb of the day, he came back on the remnants of the breakaway after the descent and attacked them to win solo.
