Kristof Vandewalle (30) finds himself in an uncomfortable situation. He is still looking for a team for the new season, but time is running out. "I did not think it would be so difficult to find a new team," said the triple Belgian time trial champion.
Since his departure from Trek where he rode for two seasons, Vandewalle has been looking for a new team. "In June/July, I realized I had to look elsewhere," he told Sporza.
Since last year's Vuelta, everything has seemed to go wrong for Vandewalle. He crashed and broke a rib in th Spanish race. In early October 2014, he crashed in training, in the Giro he broke his finger and then he suffered from a knee injury.
"The misfortune and the pain won't stop. But now all the problems are solved and I feel fully fit," said Vandewalle.
Now nothing happens on the transfer market. "At the moment I see two options. One at a World Tour team and one with a pro continental team I hope to get more news this week.
"I would like to have certainty quickly and know where I stand as soon as possible. I won't refuse a a pro continental team right away but I won't accept every offer," he said.
A possible retirement has also occasionally been on his mind: "Sometimes I think about it. I know I'm still young and can still do a few years but the thought of retirement has touched my mind.
"I am still very happy on the bike and hope for a new team. I have not stopped thinking about what I do want to do next season: To pass on my experience to young riders. I won't think too much about it. There is still time, although it is running out," said Vandewalle.
