Tinkoff-Saxo will try to ride aggressively in this year's edition of Paris-Nice which starts tomorrow. The team lines up a strong roster that is led by Rafal Majka who will target a high result in the general classification.
This year's Paris-Nice is a novel affair. With no time trials or major summit finishes, it is an open race that suits aggressive riders and puncheurs.
This has prompted Tinkoff-Saxo to line up at the race with a plan to go on the attack and create their own opportunities. With several classics riders like Matti Breschel, Karsten Kroon, and Ivan Rovny on the roster, the team has a number of cards to play in the breakaways throughout the 8-day race while Nikolay Trusov and Breschel will focus on the sprints.
The team's main goal, however, remains the GC for which the team will line up their Polish talent Rafal Majka. He would undoubtedly have preferred a harder course with more climbs but will get an important chance to lead the team as he prepares to share the captaincy role in the Giro with Nicolas Roche.
“This edition of Paris-Nice is very different from previous editions without any time trials and no mountain top finishes," sports director Fabrizio Guidi said. "But there will be a few very long and hard stages leaving it up to the teams’ tactics to form the stages. Tactically, it’s going to be a very interesting race.
"We’re in the race to support Rafal for a solid result in the GC but I’m sure Chris (Sørensen) will get an opportunity as well but in the terrain this race offers, we have to play our cards right and preferably be aggressive.”
