The 195 kilometer long Belgian one-day race, GP Impanis was dominated by a breakaway consisting of ten riders. They were joined by a group of chasers without any Tinkoff-Saxo participation and managed to go all the way to the finish line.
The early breakaway worked hard to stay away throughout the day but they were joined by a chase group of 8 riders entering the final three kilometers of the race and they managed to stay in front of the field. Tinkoff-Saxo were hoping to set up Nikolay Trusov for an expected bunch sprint but the junction was never made and the breakaway succeeded in staying away.
Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) won the race.
“It was a bit messy today. Entering the finale, we knew we had to bridge from the field and I was in a few attacks before the right chase group was allowed to go and we missed it. From then on, we tried to prepare for a bunch sprint and we put Trusov in a good position. But it was too late and we didn’t get the result we wanted. I’m riding again tomorrow in Isbergues and of course the Worlds next weekend. Honestly, I’m enjoying my final races”, concludes Nicki Sørensen.
