Matti Breschel mixed it up with the pure sprinters when he took third in yesterday's stage of the Tour of Denmark. Being up against faster rider, the Dane and his Tinkoff-Saxo team were satisfied with the outcome.
The 195 kilometer long second stage and the longest of this year’s edition of Tour of Denmark took the peloton from Skive to the city of Aarhus. Quite a few hills were on the menu before concluding the day on a city circuit with a flat finish and another bunch sprint was expected.
However, several attempts were made to explode the peloton from the get-go but a trio consisting of Rolf Nyborg Broge (Team Post Danmark), Kenny De Ketele (Topsport Vlaanderen) and Frederique Robert (Team Wanty) who created the first long-lasting break. Once again, it was the Cult-VitalWater and Tinkoff-Saxo riders who took responsibility of the pace-setting and the escapees were brought back with 50 kilometers to go.
In Aarhus, the stage was concluded in bunch sprint where Astana’s Andrea Guardini won ahead of Gerald Ciolek (MTN) and Tinkoff-Saxo’s Matti Breschel.
DS, Lars Michaelsen was content with the result:
“Our main focus was keeping our guys for the GC in the front to finish among the best and they did just like yesterday. Guardini and Ciolek are world class sprinters and it’s a good result finishing third although a win obviously would have been perfect. Now, we’re facing the most demanding stage tomorrow and the hilly circuit in the streets of Vejle and our goal is to keep our GC boys up there in the GC."
Magnus Cort (Cult-Vitalwater) still leads overall.
