The Russian businessman Oleg Tinkov would like to see the four tenors in major cycling tours in 2015 to compete on the roads of the three major stage races : Giro, Tour and Vuelta. He dreams of seeing Alberto Contador, Chris Froome, Vincenzo Nibali and Nairo Quintana compete in all three races. The team boss Saxo-Tinkoff offers for this a million in compensation.
This morning, he wanted to clarify his statements on Facebook : "I try to clear my #3GTchallenge idea. It is not about me, and not about being the Tsar of cycling! It is about the sport we all love. It is not normal when 4/5 best riders are consistently trying to avoid each other in the major races, and win without hard competition. If we would like to create bigger interest to cycling, higher TV audience and income, there is no other way but the best compete in the same races. Thus it is difficult to have a fitness in all 3 Grand Tours such as Giro,Tour de France and la Vuelta, I propose that at least 4 the best are committed to do ALL 3! This will make all of the contenders equaled, and no one will benefit from the tiredness of the other. Example: Alberto is doing Giro and Tour in 2015, Froome and Nibali are set to skip Giro that means that in the Tour they both have advantage on Alberto from the start. This is not creating the interest to the sport and NOT determines the best athlete."
"Actually, this is UCI’s business, they’d have to think about it and make this happened, are they governing body at all? Honestly, I don’t have that many millions to throw them out, but what I am trying to achieve at least to bring the attention to that matter. And YES, I am behind with what I’ve offered."
