Darwin Atapuma of the BMC Racing Team was part of a 25-man breakaway from which the stage winner emerged Thursday at the Vuelta a España.
Nicolas Roche (Team Sky) beat Haimar Zubeldia (Trek Factory Racing) for the win as Atapuma (21st place) and the chasers arrived 38 seconds later.
The overall standings remained unchanged with Tom Dumoulin (Team Giant-Alpecin) holding a three-second lead over Fabio Aru (Astana Pro Team) with three days to go.
Peter Velits, who led the race for one day after the BMC Racing Team won the Stage 1 team time trial, did not start due to fatigue, Dr. Daniele Zaccaria said. The team is down to five riders following the withdrawal of Marcus Burghardt, Samuel Sánchez and Tejay van Garderen due to injuries.
