Tony Martin (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) is defending his title at the Tour of Belgium, which got underway yesterday, even though he wasn’t supposed to be part of the team roster.
“The Tour of Belgium wasn’t on my race calendar this year” the world time trial champion wrote on his website. A three week layoff, however, made Martin change his mind og take to the starting line in the home country of his team.
“By taking part in the Tour of Belgium, I’m getting in shape for the Tour de France. Thus I’m killing two birds with one stone. I’m the defending champion here and I have come to try and win again,” the 28-year-old explained.
It goes without saying that Martin will keep a watchful eye on Friday’s 15km individual time trial in Beveren. Together with Fabian Cancellara (RadioShack-Leopard) Martin is the big favourite to win the race against the clock. Last year he convincingly destroyed the opposition and thus laid the groundwork for his overall victory. A similar scenario might be on the cards this year.
“The Tour of Belgium is, evidently, very important to our team,” Martin added. “And it’s a lot of fun to ride here. The enthusiasm at the roadside here is second to none; it really takes your breath away.”
